Somehow, 2017 has come to an end, and I think it is time this year is laid to rest. For all of its misfortunes, though, 2017 was a great year for discoveries in all areas. Here are my 17 favorite finds of 2017!
Food & Drink:
Salted Caramel Tea: Given to me by a friend’s mom from Walmart, this is probably my all-time favorite kind of tea. Truly brings new meaning to the phrase, “hidden treasure.”
La Croix: I have never had the palette for sparkling water until I tried La Croix, which has a great balance of freshness and flavor. (My favorite kind is Peach Pear.)
Trader Joe’s Pumpkin & Roasted Pepitas Cookies: I impulse-bought these cookies when I was in an intensely autumnal mood and I am so glad I did. Not only are they healthier than your average cookie, they are sweet and salty, light and crispy, and more delicious than any other fall treat. But beware, it is far too easy to eat the whole bag in one sitting.
First Aid Beauty Oil-Free Cleanser: I’ve only been using this cleanser for a week and I am already raving about it – that’s how you know it’s good. I’ve never understood what people mean when they say “My skin is glowing,” until I used First Aid Beauty!
10.0.6 Peel-Off Face Masks: These face masks really do brighten up your skin and give it some TLC. While they are pretty sticky to apply, they peel off easily. My personal favorite is the “Get Your Glow On” papaya and citrus peel-off.
Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15: Man, 2017 really was a good year because my skin cleared up like nobody’s business! Now I nourish my complexion with this protecting and hydrating moisturizer. This drugstore buy really is a level above any other moisturizer I’ve used.
Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara: Recommended buy a friend whose eyelash game I complimented, this drugstore mascara is awesome for defined, natural-looking lashes. No clumps in sight with this one!
Veer Foundation: One day, my mom handed me a box labeled Veer, saying that she saw it on TV and ordered it online. My first thought was, “Oh nooooooo,” but I tried the stuff anyway. Behold, this is the greatest foundation I’ve ever used. It covers better, lasts longer, and feels lighter than anything else. I’m going on my third bottle of the stuff and I’m not planning on quitting anytime soon.
Madewell V-neck Tees: These shirts technically weren’t supposed to be mine – my sisters bought them, found the V-cut too low for them, and passed them on to me. Their loss, because they are the softest and most well-made tees in my wardrobe. I have them in navy and light pink, and I probably wear one of the two every single week.
Boyfriend jeans: I’m probably late to the party on this one, but I finally gave the old slouchy pair of jeans in the back of my closet a chance this year. I learned how to style a boyfriend cut, and now that is all I wear. They are so much comfier than skinny jeans! My favorite pairs are a medium-wash distressed pair from Hollister and a dark wash “girlfriend” cut from American Eagle.
Overalls: This one is a bit quirky, I know. I found a great pair from Forever 21 back in September and love to wear them with a striped tee and my Converse hightops. Kinda retro, kinda trendy, and just really really fun.
Music, Movies, & Tech
Hillsong Young & Free: I started listening to Hillsong Y&F on a long drive to Mexico for a missions trip and I have loved them ever since. Some songs are really fun and some are just amazing worship songs. Regardless, they are aimed at an audience of people like me.
First 5 App: I stumbled across this app created by Proverbs 31 Ministries and it really has changed the way I read the Bible. In a short devotional each day, a chapter of Scripture teaches me about who God is, how he has worked in poeple’s lives, and some of the bigger themes of the Bible. I highly recommend this for everyone who wants to learn more about Jesus in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming.
Maren Morris: Another road trip find, this girl is bad-ass. Her rock-infused country style is different and daring and so catchy. I’ve definitely memorized her whole album. If you want to check out just a few of her songs, try “Second Wind”, “Drunk Girls Don’t Cry”, and “Just Another Thing”.
Spotify Premium & Hulu for College Students: Alright friends, if you are in college, you need to take this very seriously. As a student, you are eligible for Spotify Premium and Hulu, together, for just $5 a month! That’s all the music and all the TV and all the movies you want for 5 bucks. Best decision I ever made!
Will & Grace (Original): When I heard that a remake of the old sitcom Will & Grace was coming out, I decided I wanted to go back to its roots and see for myself what all the hype was about. The verdict: one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. This is my feel-good comedy for when homework gets done and I just want to chill. I’d put this one pretty close to Friends in terms of quality.
The Last Word: Last Tuesday was family movie night at my house, so we sent Dad to Redbox to pick up something good. He came back with two movies he had never heard of, both of which having received less than 75% on Rotten Tomatoes. After looking up synopses of both online, we decided upon The Last Word with Amanda Seyfried. I had low expectations, but I was completely surprised with the depth and quality of this film. Just watch it, you won’t be disappointed. Besides, who doesn’t love Amanda Seyfried?
That’s it for this year, but I think it was a pretty successful one! What were your favorite finds this year?
Happy New Year! Wishing you all a 2018 full of blessings.
